An Overview of Hanna Capital and Investment Philosophy
In 1989, Principals Frank J. Hanna III and David G. Hanna began underwriting portfolios. They started with $160,000, and have continually refined their mathematical models for analyzing behavioral patterns, constructing portfolios accordingly. Over the past two decades they have developed extensive experience underwriting large portfolios of individually high-risk, high-return assets. As of the end of 2007, the portfolio of assets under their oversight exceeded $4 billion.

There are certain central themes that underlie the investment strategies of the principals of Hanna Capital.
  • They are driven by data, not subjective assessments.
  • They seek to invest with a penetrating, sometimes painful assessment of current reality - they seek to see things as they really are, rather than engage in wishful thinking.
  • They prefer to have a high degree of liquidity in their investments.
  • They despise losing money.
  • Their investments are not designed to "swing for the fences." The principals are financially independent, and do not need to gamble with the resources of others.
  • They are focused on superior risk-adjusted returns, measuring risk as the maximum drawdown of any particular portfolio.
  • Their experience has shown them that a quantitative analysis of the interrelationship of assets within portfolios provides the knowledge to greatly minimize risk, while retaining high returns, via risk-averse underwriting.
As the principals have a significant amount of their own capital at stake, they manage the investment process themselves. They are the ones stirring the pot. They enjoy the process, and do not delegate investment decisions to lower-level decision makers who have not amassed the track record of creating wealth while minimizing risk.

The following quotation from Josef Pieper summarizes their investment philosophy:

“To recognize what is real, however, should certainly not be thought an easy endeavor; it is quite exacting and in many ways hazardous. Goethe once wrote: ‘In all actions and decisions it is important to perceive clearly the objects involved and to deal with them according to their nature.’ However, should we fail to see the events the way they really occurred, then all further considerations become futile; the precondition for further reasoning is simply missing. The precondition for every ethical decision is the perception and examination of reality. And yet this perception makes up only the first half of prudence; the other half consists in “translating” our knowledge of reality into decision and action. We are thus able to state: prudence is the art of making the right decision based on the corresponding reality - no matter whether justice, courage or temperance is at stake.”
